Creative Writing at Leeds Waterfront
As part of our creative workshops and activities on the run up to Leeds Waterfront Festival we have been delighted to welcome local poet and writer, Matt Abbott to the festival team.
Matt has delivered unique creative writing workshops on the water, inspired by the water for people of all ages to attend. The workshops took place on board a barge and invited members to use the picturesque Leeds Waterfront as their creative inspiration. Tickets for the workshops were snapped up in minutes, and we are only disappointed that we couldn't hold more!
Some of the work created during the workshops will be featured over festival weekend, as part of a digital exhibition held in the 1920s cinema a Armley Mills Museum.
Matt Abbott hails from Wakefield and has been a spoken word artist from the age of 18. Abbott was part of ‘Skint and Demoralised’ and enjoyed success as part of the band up until 2013, when he decided to return to solo performances of his original spoken word material. He currently holds a residency at The Hepworth in Wakefield, and regularly teaches creative workshops to audiences of all ages, from Key Stage 2 children to emerging poets, young offenders and adult groups.
Matt's work has received wide critical acclaim, with AAA Music calling him “Genuinely the best indie lyricist to surface in recent years” and there’s no doubt that he has brought his own special flavour of creativity to the Waterfront Festival this summer.
These creative writing workshops are part of a programme of creative opportunities funded by Leeds Inspired.
