Knitting Communities Together
In 2015, we started something! Inspired by the heritage of the woollen mills along the canal, we came up with the idea of yarn-bombing something along the water. A friend of ours had a similar idea, at just about the same time! He runs a company called Little Fingy, selling fingers puppets all over the UK. The finger puppets are created in Peru and Little Fingy share the profits with the schools the knitters' children attend, supporting the purchase of equipment to enhance and encourage learning.
The ice-cream van causes a stir wherever it goes and we are delighted to welcome it (and it's owner Dale) back to the Waterfront Festival for another year, promising waterside finger puppet fun at Granary Wharf.
Not content with yarn bombing an ice-cream van, the group had formed a strong bond after late nights knitting and stitching the woollen masterpiece and with the bi-centenary of the completion of the Leeds and Liverpool canal to celebrate in 2016, came up with the idea of yarn-bombing a boat! An idea that made perfect sense (to us!)... a chance to explore the textile heritage of the canal, reach out and connect with more people, quite simply knitting communities together, with the heritage of the waterways as inspiration.
The big reveal of the latest yarn bomb will finally happen at Granary Wharf on Saturday 25th June! Knitters have come together from different parts of Yorkshire, their front rooms, hospital beds and local pubs to create some truly extraordinary and imaginative pieces. This barge will be like no other...quite simply an explosion of colour!
The Knitting Communities Together group will be proudly knitting in the sun beside their special barge all festival weekend! Come and say hello, even better...bring your needles!
