Junk Boat Building at Castleton Mill
Renovated flax mill Castleton Mill will be our host site for the junk boat building competition this year and we couldn’t be more pleased. Located only a 10-minute walk from Granary Wharf, you’ll not only have the chance to get close to the water and discover the joys of the canal path on your way, but it will give you the opportunity to really appreciate the magnificent mill building. A Grade II listed former textile mill, Castleton oozes history as it looks over our glorious canal.
After last year’s success, this year’s junk boat race is planned to be even bigger and better! Watch four of our intrepid teams of makers creating their weird and wonderful junk boats using the people of Leeds’ waste! Tyres, plastic containers and scrap wood will be just some of the materials that the teams will be using. After the creation of the boats, the teams will paddle all the way to Leeds Dock in a race to the finish.
Visitors are encouraged to watch the junk boat building directly opposite the mill on the canal path, where you’ll have a perfect view of the teams who are building their boats in the Mill carpark over the weekend.
The teams will be making their boats at 11am-4pm on Saturday and 11am-2pm on Sunday. The junk boats will hit the water at 2pm on Sunday to battle it out to be the 2016 champions of the water! This really is a spectacle not to be missed choose your team and cheer them on! Races takes place on Sunday 2-4pm on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
