Expect the Un-expected at Oddy Locks!
A beautiful oasis alongside the canal, that's what it is! Oddy Locks is home to a lovely little tea room, The Stables, owned by Dee and Carole, just a 10 minute walk along the towpath from the city centre at Granary Wharf.
With a recent adoption of the stretch of the canal from Spring to Oddy Locks under their belts, Dee and Carole and their local community group have transformed the site over the last 18 months, removing graffiti, creating beautiful planted areas and restoring the natural environment in all its glory. Importantly they've also created a really popular and welcoming hub along the canal, somewhere to grab a cuppa, some cake and someone to talk to!
This isn't just an ordinary tea room by the way, steeped in the heritage of the canal it may be, but there's still room for a rather large glitter ball hanging from the ceiling, which gives you a real insight into the personality of the lovely folk you'll come across there....friendly and light-hearted with a big dollop of fun!
Over festival weekend, the team at The Stables will offer a wonderful taste of heritage with demonstrations from local traditional work boat owners and ‘Bilbo’ the horse. Both in traditional costume, they are always a wonderful sight along the canal.
Tasty cakes all expertly baked by Carole, ice cream from local favourite Northern Bloc and refreshments for visitors with a little live music will ensure you can enjoy the picnic area and take a welcome break as you explore the canal.
Expect, buskers and West Indian Street Food to compliment this lovely spot along the canal, a place to be sociable and make friends with the wider community... and we have it on good authority they share their home with lizards, water voles, Kingfishers, Herons, Cormorants, ducks, moor hens, geese and swans!
We did warn you!
