This is why we love Leeds Dock!
With the sun shining on Leeds' waterfront this week, the clever people at Leeds Dock have planned a fun-filled Waterfront Festival Weekend, and this year, it's a big one! To celebrate our 10th Anniversary, there's something for everyone at this busy central site! Dragon Boat Racing, Street Food galore, imaginative children's entertainment, DJs, performance and Caribbean vibes on the menu at Dock 29! Make sure you don't miss out on all the excitement!
Dragon Boat Races
If you like a bit of competition, The Dragon Boat races are the best place to start! Running from 11am to mid afternoon, local businesses bring their teams to the Dock to battle it out for the title of champion, and to get their names etched on the 2017 trophy! Radio Aire will keep us entertained as our hosts for the event, where they'll provide us with commentary, music and lots of banter!
Dressed in some crazy and creative fancy dress costumes, the teams create a colourful spectacle on the water as they race up and down the dock to the chanting of their cox, all raising money for this years nominated charity Simon on the Streets. There's some serious competition on the water at Leeds Dock this year but who will be crowned our 10th Anniversary champions? Don't miss it!
Pop Up and Play Co
At big events, sometimes a parent's worry is that the kids will be bored and it will taint the day. Well have no fear, Pop Up and Play Co are here! A dedicated area for children at Leeds Dock from 12-4pm on both days of the festival, expect lots of engaging activities including a Treasure Hunt. You'll have a job dragging them away!
Lego Boat Making with Sky
A partnership of Leeds Libraries and Sky brings another child-friendly activity which will really allow your youngsters to get creative! Take them along to design and build a boat made of Lego, that will float on the water and join the festival flotilla! There'll also be a splash selfie booth, so that you can capture some of these precious moments. This event is FREE but tickets are limited so make sure you click here to sign yourself up!
The British Street Food Awards
After last year's success (and the fact we ate our weight in delicious grub), we knew The Waterfront Festival just wouldn't be the same without the Street Food Awards! Again, pitching up at Leeds Dock, The British Street Food Awards Northern Heat will be boasting a packed out menu of tasty food for our visitors to sample (and vote for their favourites) all weekend long!
The British Street Food Awards is the toughest street food competition in the world! The showdown in Leeds is one of five regional heats round the UK and the winner will be invited to a live, national cook-off, judged by the general public and Michelin-starred chefs. The British winners will then head off to Berlin to represent the UK up against the very best of Europe's gastronomers at the inaugural European Street Food Awards - click here to find out more about it!
To vote for your favourites at the festival, click here to download the app and make sure you come along with an empty stomach! You're going to have to taste EVERYTHING to make a sound decision (or that's what we're telling ourselves!).
The menu is mouth-watering and bursting at the seams this year. Here's who's battling it out:
Tikk's Thai Kitchen
Dim Sum SU Street Food, popups and Events
The Blue Caribou Canteen
Mr D's Magnificent Pie Machine
The Baking Biker
Ruby's Street Kitchen
ho will be your favourite?
