Junk Boat Challenge - Get Involved!
CONTENDERS! Leeds Waterfront Festival is nearly upon us and the awesome guys at Open Source Arts are heading up the fun Junk Boat Challenge for us this year and this is the FINAL CALL for more teams to get involved!
Over the last few months, Kirkstall Road Recycling Centre has been saving up wierd and wonderful pieces of waste materials destined to become our creative crafts! Needless to say, they have saved up a serious pile of junk perfect for our 10th Anniversary Junk Boat Challenge!
We have got some amazing teams lined up so far... but we would love a couple more! KIRKSTALL ROAD RECYCLING SITE will of course be submitting a boat, knowling these guys, they are probably already working on it! We also have our local KIRKSTALL FIRE RESCUE TEAM 'White Watch' on board this year and beware, this is a seriously competitive bunch, they are in it to win it! SIMON ON THE STREETS will be with us too for the first time, keen to battle it out on the water and finally TEAM KIRKSTALL, the amazing group of people dedicated to cleaning up our river and canal since the Boxing Day Floods.
Pretty hot competition eh? BUT don't be put off...this is a fantastic opportunity to get involved and do something really inspiring along the Leeds waterfront! If you would like to get involved, whether it's just you or a group of people that want to work together, get in touch with Phil from Open Source Arts by emailing him at firstname.lastname@example.org or give him a call on 07508543473, we would love you to get involved!
SATURDAY is build day, you get to throw the full force of your creative intention at your pile of junk and make it float like a big water-going butterfly! Building will take place at Castleton Mill along the Leeds and Liverpool, you'll get some interest from festival-goers as they explore the Leeds and Liverpool canal. We will have lots of people there with a variety of skills to help you make your creative ideas into reality!
SUNDAY is race day, with some time in the morning for finishing off your galleon, followed by a race along the canal to Granary Wharf! Remember your figureheads for the front, mascots and flags! We will have the wonderful people of White Rose Canoe Club escorting you and your boats down the canal and crowds on on-lookers walking along the tow path with you, cheering you along!
This is an epic opportunity and we are accepting final submissions of teams until this Tuesday morning 20th June, in time for a gathering and planning meeting at Open source Arts on for everybody who wants to get involved!
Don't forget, the race starts at 1.30pm on Sunday 25th June. Spectators should gather along the towpath opposite Castleton Mill on the Leeds and Liverpool canal just beyond Wellington Road Bridge to watch the race from start to finish!
Thank you to Leeds Civic Trust for supporting this fantastic event for the 10th Anniversary of Leeds Waterfront Festival.
